TLDR: École 42 brings a tuition-free, peer-taught model to Zurich with the right pedagogy for Switzerland’s developer shortage — and whether it moves the number depends on scaling that method well beyond a single campus.
The Zurich campus is a bet on how people learn
École 42 will open its first campus in German-speaking Switzerland in January 2027, taking space in the Spaces Z.One complex in Zurich-Oerlikon with an initial intake of 100 to 150 students. Admission runs through the school’s signature “piscine,” a four-week immersion that begins on 14 September 2026, and the programme that follows lasts 12 to 24 months at each student’s own pace.
The mechanics are the argument. Students learn peer-to-peer, building real projects and grading each other’s work, so projects and peer review stand in for teachers and lectures. Tuition is free, entry opens at 18 on ability alone, and AI (artificial intelligence) runs through the whole curriculum as the working environment. Graduates leave with a cybersecurity specialisation option and either a Swiss federal certificate (brevet fédéral) or an RNCP (Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles) qualification. The Zurich school is led by Baschi Sale, Corina Schedler and Cristina Bucher, and it extends a Swiss footprint that started with the Renens campus near Lausanne in 2021 — one node in a network of 58 campuses across 30 countries.
Switzerland is short 38,700 developers, and traditional supply fills the gap too slowly
The timing matters because the demand is documented. ICT-Berufsbildung Schweiz, the sector’s own training body, projects that Switzerland will need 38,700 additional ICT (information and communication technology) specialists by 2030, with 79 per cent of ICT qualifications flowing through vocational routes rather than universities. Federal economists put the gap close to 40,000 on the same horizon.

Set the two numbers side by side and the honest read is uncomfortable: a first cohort of 100 to 150 stays a rounding error against a 38,700-person shortfall. Anyone framing the Oerlikon opening as the answer to the talent crunch is measuring the wrong thing. The significance sits in the method rather than the seat count — and the method is where traditional Swiss education has moved slowest.
What 42 gets right that conventional education keeps getting wrong
Three design choices carry the weight. Dropping tuition and the diploma prerequisite widens the intake to career-changers, self-taught coders and the talent the university track quietly filters out — precisely the pool a shortage economy should recruit from. Making the work project-based and peer-graded mirrors how software actually gets built, so employability rests on demonstrated output rather than a transcript. And treating AI as the working environment produces graduates fluent in the tools their first employer already runs.
These are familiar ideas — ones incumbent institutions have resisted because they threaten the lecture, the credential and the fee. That resistance is the real gap 42 exposes: a supply system optimised for its own structure rather than for the labour market it feeds.
The ceiling: one campus proves the concept; scaling it is the real work
A single school, however well designed, barely moves a national number. Serge Reymond, president of 42 Switzerland, has been explicit that the expansion depends on the backing of local companies — which makes the model’s reach a function of employer conviction as much as classroom capacity. Left there, 42 Zurich stays an admirable pilot that tops out well short of the problem it was built to answer.
The more useful question is what scales the method. For employers, the move is to treat 42’s project-and-peer model as a hiring and internal-training template that goes beyond a recruitment pond — fund cohorts, host stages, and mirror the peer-graded format in their own onboarding. For policymakers, the lever is the apprenticeship quota the sector body wants lifted from 5.9 to 8.1 per cent, so vocational routes carry the volume universities leave on the table. And for mid-career professionals, the signal is that the credential is losing its monopoly: demonstrable, AI-fluent, project-tested skill is becoming the currency, and continuing education should be rebuilt around producing it. Switzerland has campuses to spare. What it lacks is the method 42 just planted in Oerlikon — and the work now is to copy it faster than one building a year.
